Kitty Harbor is home base for the Animal Safe Haven Association, or "ASHA". Founded and tirelessly run by longtime animal care worker Delyn Kosbab, ASHA is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, all-volunteer organization dedicated to the health and welfare of neglected animals in Washington state.
ASHA's specific and ongoing mission at Kitty Harbor is the rescue, rehabilitation, and placement of homeless and neglected cats and kittens. Though our only full days open to the public are saturdays and sundays, the housing, feeding, cleaning, and medical care of the dozens of new cats we receive each week is a 24/7 job that requires energy, time, money, and a whole lot of heart.
And it truly is a labor of love. Since we are a non-profit organization, none of the small but dedicated family of volunteers at Kitty Harbor are paid for the work we do here. We exist solely through gracious donations of time, supplies, food, medicine, veterinary services, foster homes, and the small fee we receive from the adoption of each kitty.
Delyn Kosbab, founder
It must be stressed that Kitty Harbor is not a casual pet store where members of the public can wander in, play with the cute kitties just for fun, and then leave. Rather, we're a serious rescue and adoption facility with a very clear and passionate focus on the welfare of cats and on the business of finding loving homes for them once they're ready.
Since we're admittedly not a customer service-oriented establishment, our frankness may throw potential adopters for a loop. We realize we may come off as a bit gruff (especially on busy saturdays), but it's only because the work we do is exhausting, both physically and emotionally, and because we need to be thorough in placing our kitties in the very best environments possible.
We're nice folks, honestly, and we really do want to help every person who comes through our doors, but the kitties always come first, so sometimes our people skills come second. Your patience and compassion for our mission are much appreciated!
What to expect when adopting from us:
As we've mentioned in other sections of this site, Kitty Harbor isn't a place to simply come and look at cute kittens. Our purpose is to find these cats loving homes, so you should only come to visit us if you're ready to adopt a cat that day. In order to meet and interact with the kitties, we usually require that people fill out pre-adoption paperwork before they enter the viewing area.
Because we're devoted to the physical and psychological welfare of our kitties, we have a couple rules we stick very firmly to:
1. We don't place cats in households that practice declawing. We simply don't approve of this unnecessary and cruel procedure.
2. We don't adopt out single young kittens if they will be the only cat in the household. This is a rule that many people don't understand at first, but we believe very strongly that the companionship of another cat is crucial to a kitten's psychological and social development. Adopting more than one cat greatly reduces the chances of getting a "brat cat" and assures a more even tempered, friendly, outgoing personality.
3. We may choose not to adopt young kittens to households with small children. Kittens are small, fragile, developing beings, and sometimes toddlers can mistake them for toys and inadvertently harm them, so we screen very carefully when young kids are part of the equation.
4. All adopted cats must leave in a carrier. If you don't bring your own, we have carriers for purchase in our boutique.
YES, THERE'S AN ADOPTION FEE. Some people are surprised to learn upon adoption that we request a donation of between $65 - $95 for each kitty. We cannot emphasize strongly enough that we're not "selling" cats, and that we do not make a profit of any kind from these donations.
In a perfect world, food, litter, medicine, vaccines, flea treatments, spay & neuter surgery, veterinary care, and all the other things that go into taking care of each sick and abandoned kitty until they're ready to adopted would be free. But in reality, they cost a LOT of money. Please know that with every donation you're retroactively paying for the weeks of care, feeding, and rehabilitation that made your newest family member the healthy, happy little purring bundle of joy that you're taking home with you.
We gladly accept cash or local checks. Unfortunately, we're not set up to process debit or credit cards at this time, so be sure to hit the ATM before you come :)

I AM AN ANIMAL RESCUER
I AM AN ANIMAL RESCUER
My job is to assist God's creatures.
I was born with a passion to fulfill their needs.
I take in helpless, unwanted, homeless creatures without planning or selection.
I have patted a mangy head with a bare hand.
I have given comfort to someone vicious and afraid.
I have fallen in love thousands of times.
And I have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count.
I have animal friends and friends who have animal friends.
I instinctively communicate with animals.
I notice those lost or abandoned at the roadside.
And my heart aches and my vehicle stops.
I will tame feral felines and find them safe homes.
I will board an injured bird until it can fly.
I will hand-raise a field mouse
And carry spiders outside.
I know of no creature unworthy of my time.
There is nothing more right than helping those in need,
Nothing more rewarding than saving a life,
No higher recognition than watching them thrive.
There is nothing more wrong than to neglect or abuse the innocent.
By the love of those I've been privileged to rescue,
I have been rescued.
I know that true unconditional love really is,
For I've seen it though the eyes of so many,
Grateful for so little.
I am an Animal Rescuer.
My work is never done.
My home is never quiet.
My wallet is always empty,
But my heart is always full.
